Prompt Cracker
Word 261
Pairing Sokka/Suki

“Man, there’s no food in this place,” Sokka complained as he searched the cupboards of Zuko’s beach house. Technically, it was the Fire Lord’s beach house, but it was too creepy even thinking that.
“You heard Zuko,” Suki said, wiping dust off of one of the kitchen chairs and carefully settling her weight onto it. “No one’s been here for years.”
“Yeah, but I’m hungry, and Katara’s taking forever at the market
“Maybe we could - daakh!”
“What?”
Sokka whirled around, sword unsheathed and eyes scanning for some enemy. He saw Suki on the table, legs tucked under her and staring at a corner of the room.
“I think I just saw a hopper-rat.”
“Really? Where’d he go?”
“Please tell me you’re not thinking about eating it.”
“…of course not.”
Sokka sheathed his sword and turned back to his search while Suki kept vigil for the rodent. Sokka suddenly let out a victorious shout and produced a dusty tin from the deep confines of the pantry. With utter glee, he tore the top off and found a few dozen crackers inside.
“Want some?”
At seeing Suki’s disbelieving look, Sokka turned defensive. “I’m a growing warrior. I need food.”
“I’m not sure that qualifies as food anymore, Sokka.”
He ignored that comment and, eying them carefully, took a bite. It crunched loudly and his jaw worked excessively. After chewing for a solid minute, he swallowed, choked, and assessed another cracker before popping it in his mouth.
“Seriously?”
“What? They’re pretty tasty if you get past stale, mealy taste.”
“You’re lucky you’re adorable.”

Title Heartbreak Woman
Summary While disguised as a Kyoshi Warrior, King Kuei develops a crush on Mai.
Characters Mai/one-sided!Kuei, Ty Lee, Azula
Words 724

Mai was raised to be a courtier, and she was quite good at it. That isn’t to say that she was at all enthusiastic about it or really put any effort in it. However, she’d managed to become an ally of the princess. That had come with a lot of staring from other people, wondering just what about this silent, severe girl would be of any interest to the royal family.
Mai figured it was the knives. Everyone liked the knives.
Kneeling behind Azula next to Ty Lee before the Earth King, she found herself wondering why he was staring.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Azula had told her and Ty Lee to keep the Earth King amused. She had other things to attend to. They’d gone to the throne room to do just that, but what actually happened was a little different.
While Ty Lee amused the bear, King Kuei – he’d insisted on her using his name. Whatever – got Mai. Mai was, by definition, not amusing. However, he liked to talk and seemed satisfied with her monosyllabic answers.
“I’ve read that Kyoshi Island is very beautiful. Tell me, do you really have your own sea monster in the bay?”
“Yes. Your majesty.”
She nearly forgot to use the honorific. He was barely anything like a king. Mai didn’t really understand how the disguise actually worked on Azula when she was so obviously Azula. He just didn’t have it.
“I’m sure it’s very different here than what you’re used to at home. Are you enjoying your visit to Ba Sing Se?”
“Yes, your majesty.”
Mai glanced at Ty Lee’s attempts to turn Bosco into her new acrobat partner. She tried to signal for help with her eyes, but Ty Lee was in her own world.
So. Bored.
“Would you like to see a trick, your highness?”
“Of course.”
Mai had already thrown the knife before he got his answer out. The Earth Kingdom emblem behind him, a small, golden square within a circle, was the perfect target. It struck dead center.
She imagined the Dai Li in the rafters to be having aneurism and dropping down any minute.
She expected outraged yelling, stuttering panic, and order for the guards to take her down – and the fight would have been welcomed.
She did not expect him to stand and applaud her, simply delighted by the display of accuracy.
“How wonderful! Are all the Kyoshi Warriors able to throw with such skill?”
That was the funniest thing he’d said this entire conversation.
“Skill? That was barely a parlor trick, your majesty.” Four knives slipped into her hand, and she let the light glint off of them. “You got an apple?”

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

“I kinda feel bad for King Kuei.”
“Yeah. That whole king to starving refugee transition must be rough.”
“Not that, Mai. The other thing.”

Ty Lee could stare at her with a raised brow all she wanted. The answer wasn’t going to fly into her head.  Ty Lee’s expectant stare morphed into dazed comprehension.
“You mean you didn’t know? How could you not know?”
“I’m just as stumped as you are.”
“Mai. Kuei totally had a crush on you!”
Sure he did.”
“Uh, yeah, he did. I mean, come on! He all but ignored me. Which one of us did he take on a private tour of the palace grounds?”
“He was being a friendly dolt. Do you realize how many times I could have killed him?”
“Oh, he was being friendly, all right.”
“What’s going on, girls?”
“Azula! Can you believe that Mai didn’t know about Kuei this whole time?”
“What, exactly, didn’t she know?”
“The crush! The absolute forbidden, to-die-for love between them! She didn’t know.”
“…Oh, of course. That. Mai, you really are so thick sometimes. Ty Lee and I saw, but I caught it first, naturally. To think that you might have been a queen of this backwards kingdom. I suppose if that had happened, you could have persuaded your husband into surrendering, but that wouldn't have been near as much fun. For me anyway.”
“It would have been the most romantic thing ever!”
“You do know that the Earth Kings usually have at least five wives, right?”
What?! That two…five-timing dog!”
Mai sighed. Honestly, the foolishness she had to endure…
She rolled her eyes. The Earth King, of all people…
As if she couldn't do better than that.

These were both so hilarious! I really enjoyed reading them. I especially liked the last one; the premise was very unique.

Haha, I love your Suki and Sokka here. You characterize them so well.

"Mai figured it was the knives. Everyone liked the knives."

These all made me laugh so hard. I like your dry Mai!humor.

THIS:

“…Oh, of course. That. Mai, you really are so thick sometimes. Ty Lee and I saw, but I caught it first, naturally."

♥ Azula. This line is just so Azula.

These were both wonderful. :)

I really need to fix the format of this...later.

They were both written for the atla_crackfic exchange (I don't know if that's exactly what it's called; it's run by nuitsongeur). These were fun to do, and two pairing I'd never written before.

Again, thank you. If you have some time to kill or you're really bored, I have...more of an long, rambling idea for a fic in my tags labeled 'discussion'. I'm still trying to figure out what and how I'm going to do that one:)
